Major Shake-Up for St Andrews Golf Ticket Categories: What Local Golfers Need to Know

St Andrews Links Trust has announced the biggest shake-up to local golf ticketing in a generation – changes that will directly affect residents, club members, and visiting golfers.

From April 2026, the resident boundary will expand to include new housing developments such as St Andrews West, potentially welcoming 1,500 more households into the Links community over the next 20 years.

What’s Changing?

  • Resident Tickets – Permanent residents inside the new boundary will qualify for a Links Ticket (currently £386), giving year-round access to the world’s most famous courses.

  • Simplified Categories – From April 2027, only two main ticket categories will exist: Resident and Ordinary.

  • Discount Removal – The previous discounts for members of local clubs on North-East Fife and Ordinary tickets will end.

  • Student Tickets – Returning to a semester-based format from September.

Why the Changes?

Neil Coulson, Chief Executive of St Andrews Links Trust, explained that the review aims to keep the system “fair, balanced, and fit for the future” while supporting both residents and visitors.

The removal of club-member discounts was driven by charity law, as linking tickets to private club memberships risked being classed as offering “private benefit.”

The Bigger Picture

Golf at St Andrews has never been more popular – rounds exceeded 280,000 in both 2023 and 2024, the highest in history
With strong memberships across clubs like the New, St Rule, and St Regulus, demand is at record levels.

The new system is designed to balance this demand, ensure sustainable access, and strengthen the unique golf ecosystem in St Andrews.

What It Means for Golfers

  • Residents: More households will gain affordable access to the Links.

  • Visitors: Expect continued demand for tee times, making early booking essential.

  • Clubs: Still play a vital role in competition and community but without discounted Links tickets.
